Sewana - The Coffee Plantation Farm Our Guji Specialty Coffee comes from the Sewana farm with 150.15 hectares, and has been owned and operated by Mr. Husen Adem and his family (that were raised in the area and have long experience in coffee cultivation), since 2010. The farm is located 510 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, in Oromia Regional State, Sewana Kebele, Guji Zone, Odo Shakiso Wereda. The farm lives in the shadows of evergreens that provide a multi-family structure. Strict environmental ethics are applied at the farm whereby all work is done by hand and in chemical products are used (making the coffee from the farm organic by default). The farm's coffee production is organic, sustainable, environmentally friendly and under the shade of native trees. The coffee cherries are handpicked and sundried on raised beds for natural processing while the washed coffee is processed separately, in a Drying and Washing Stations owned by Odaa Forest Organic Coffee Plantation PLC. Mr. Husen manages a staff of 12 permanent full-time and 200 seasonal employees. The farm has competition for workers specially in the harvest season, so Mr. Husen and his family tend to pay higher wages to their pickers in order to incentivize them returning year after year. The farm has it's own nursery off-site, and utilizes shade (gravilla, accacia, and other indigenous trees) to protect the coffee as well as for creating compost to fertilize naturally. Mr. Husen is meticulous about not only the structure and management of the farm itself, but also the harvesting and processing. Both Natural and Washed lots are produced on the property.
