Malawi kidney beans are found in the family of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) is the kidney beans. They are small beans that are reddish-brown and are eaten as vegetables. They are long narrow long beans that are green and turn to red color upon maturing. Like the rest, Malawi kidney beans grow into tall plants that climb on other plants. The plant produces flowers that turn into pods that hold the seeds of the plants. Its name is due to its visual resemblance in shape and also in color to the kidney. The beans have extraordinary health benefits. The kidney beans are reddish-brown and have a mild taste after being boiled, and they absorb flavors from the seasonings they are cooked in. The kidney beans contain high amounts of folic acid, calcium, carbohydrates, fiber, and proteins, amongst other essential nutrients. There are various varieties of kidney beans, but Charlevoix is the commonly grown variety in Malawi. The kidney beans prefer soils that are not so much acidic. They do well in soils with a ph. of below 5. They have a tap root that does not run too deep. They require soils that are deep but not necessarily humus as the plants have nitrogen-fixing nodules in their roots, which make them suitable to be grown even in nutrient-deficient soils. For maximum production, Malawi kidney beans require a rainfall of between 700 and 1500 mm that is well spread throughout the growing period up to to the point that the ponds start turning from green to brownish. The plant requires maximum rainfall during the flowering period. They do well in warm areas, thus the reason they are commonly grown in the central and northern provinces of Malawi, where the temperatures do not go below 10 degrees Celsius at night. The Charlevoix variety does well in Malawi and is widely grown by both small scale and large scale farmers. The variety is tolerant to the temperature ranges found in the country and also the well-distributed rainfall over its growing period. The plants are planted as seeds directly into the fields on the onset of the long rains in the regions, and they sprout after 3 days. After 3 months in the field, they produce flowers that turn into buds that have the pods. The pods are ready to be harvested 3-4 weeks after they emerged, depending on the use. The beans are either harvested as green ponds or after they dry. The green ponds are harvested by hand before they change color from green to brown. For the beans that are needed as dry, harvesting is done after the ponds turn into brown. It is harvested by uprooting the whole plant and the pods before they dry and open, spilling the seeds on the farm. The plants are then sundried. The plants are harvested when the moisture content is between 13 and 15 percent to ensure maximum weight and minimum field losses. The harvested and threshed seeds are stored in well-treated containers to avoid being attacked by pests such as weevils. They are packed in various sizes ranging from half a kilo to jute bags of 50 kilos or according to the needs of a client. This platform brings kidney beans to the world.
